New DMV series registration plates are being issued as of April 1. This is the "retro" design everyone is talking about.

I will tell you that a couple of years ago I avoided the DMV at the office building like the plaque. It was nothing but slow and annoying pain to anything there. I happily went through the mail and internet with the state. But awhile back I had to do a last minute thing so I went to the DMV shortly after this new system was set up. It is awesome, and I have been back many times since. Great job.

PS: the new yellow plates are uglier than the old yellow plates.

The "old" yellow registration plates were first issued in 1973. They were unique that for the first time the metal plates were coated with reflective materials as with subsequent series thereafter. The previous series orange letters on blue background weren't. If you can recall-- registration stickers were placed on the right-hand , lower corner of the plates--not on the windshield. But this changed in 1975 when registration windshield stickers were introduced to the NY motoring public.

I am sure our county comptroller will be issuing a public warning advisory statement to small business owners in the very near future. I am not at liberty to discuss the details of this announcement.

Speaking of new registration plates: the emergency services custom plates on my vehicle are 13 years old, the blue lettering on the reflective white background has faded, and the reflective material on the background is breaking down.

I called the custom plates unit of the Department of Motor Vehicles to inquire about replacing these plates with the empire gold series containing my FCC amateur radio callsign but was told I could get NEW plates with the old format. Blue lettering on a white background with a radio tower on the left hand side. The cost of manufacturing these new custom plates: $28.75.The annual fee has been raised from $5.00 to $6.25 in addition to the regular registration renewal fees.

If the people who work there treated you like a customer I would go, but for the most part they are not friendly, and they talk to you like you are some illegal immigrant pool boy. I do everything I can do on the DMV website, the local office is duplication of services, low hanging fruit that is ripe for cost elimination. Lets keep 2 people and move them to a small office at the new jail, plenty of parking.
